Hello family!
We are currently experiencing a bit of a rainy day. Which fits semi well with the fact that I've had a head cold the past day and a half. It's so not fun! But we continue onward (with tissues and hand sanitizer).
Life is just swell as a missionary. Our investigators are doing well. None of those with baptismal dates came to church :( But we did have a good lesson with Lucia and Jose Luis last night. We hadn't taught Jose Luis in about 2 weeks so it was really good.
Yesterday was just a little crazy because we ran into 2 other Spanish sisters. That's not normal. Our areas aren't supposed to overlap. Apparently there is a fair amount of confusion about the area lines up here, because of the change this past transfer. So....Lucia and Jose Luis may or may not be in our area. We shall see.
We have not seen Gilberto and Odoria again.... :( It's really sad when investigators get "lost". We will continue praying and planning and checking on them. And we shall see.
I know that this is the work of the Lord and even though it is not always easy, it is so worth it! We are helping others have the great joys of the gospel that we have enjoyed all our lives, like Mom said. It really is a different little world that we live in. With it's own vocabulary :)
We have been teaching a male investigator, Marcos, in the home of a member family in his neighborhood. Well, we've only done it once but have another lesson set up this evening. It's so nice to go into a peaceful place where the Spirit already is. He has many questions, but is open and wants to understand. It is exciting.
We are getting really excited for conference. We'll head to the stake center to watch the braodcasts live (9 am and 1 pm). We are working to get others excited about it as well. This is when we get to hear directly from the prophet of the Lord! What a great blessing. We are also going to invite our investigators to write down some questions they have then listen in conference for the answers. It's pretty neat how it works.
We are getting to know more of our members and they are pretty great! It is exciting to have strong members. We are planning to help them become even more excited about missionary work. (naturally) That's so great to hear about the baptims in the home ward! Keep up the great work, Mesa Park. Members truly are so essential to the success of the work. We don't just want people to be baptized - we want them to become faithful members who are preparing for eternal life and exaltation. And we missionaries move often so have to leave them in the hands of the ward members.
We have zone conferences every 6 weeks (approx.) and President Brady is from Orem, Utah. I am keeping a budget, Dad. Don't you worry.
I love you all very much! I know the Savior lives and wants to help us. I LOVE the phrase "come unto me" and am marking it in my scriptures. He says that to everyone, no matter what. So then we just have to put in our effort and go to Him. And oh the peace and joy we experience.

23 March 2010 - Pumped for the Work
Hola Familia Verde!
Como estan todos? Oh dear. I really want to type in Spanish, but it doesn't work on these computers. Alright, so we have now had over a week in the new area and 1 P-day. Things are going well. And going up :) Zone Conference yesterday was great. We have a huge new goal from Pres. & Sis. Brady: 3 baptisms per companionship Apr-Jun. That's what they've set at this time in the very end of the mission. It's fabulous, inspired, and challenging. Hna Pechin and I are working to digest all that we learned yesterday and put it into effect. Pres. committed us to make our own personal and companion goals so that we can achieve this big incredible goal. I'm excited, but it is a lot to think about and will require so much effort and work. And I love it!
Life is just great. It's amazing all the little things that you learn as a missionary - how to set goals and successfully achieve them, etc. So yeah. It was also wonderful to see Sis. Brady again. I just love her! And Hna Pechin and I had a good week this past week. We set baptismal dates with two more people Gilberto and Odoria (a couple). It was a good lesson and we are excited. So we currently have 4 people with baptismal dates. And Lucia (who has a date) is great and came to church on Sunday. And in our lesson yesterday, she told us she knows the Book of Mormon is true and Joseph Smith is a prophet. It was so exciting. I was grinning the entire lesson! She is doing well and I'm really excited to help her prepare herself for baptism. Other than that, we have quite a few more investigators. Some are moving along, others aren't. It is sometimes hard to help them understand the importance of doing all the little things each day. But I've seen just how crucial it is in my short time as a missionary.
As Mom said, when we follow the simple, little promptings life is so much better. It's so true! Thanks for sharing that, mom. It got me really excited to hear you've seen it firsthand. That's what we strive to have happen with our investigators - read and pray everyday and come to church.....and keep all the other commandments :)
So we are still working on getting settled, but we are doing much, much better on that. We definitely have beds. We only had a baby 'kitchen' table for a while and 3 chairs and 1 desk and no dressers. But the helpful assistants delivered furniture one night and we are pretty much all set now. It's so nice! The office couple in charge of apartments has been so helpful as well - Elder and Sister Denos. We still lack a few little things, but will continue working on it. We both have desks, lamps, a true kitchen table, and we each have a 5-draw dresser. We are well taken care of. Don't worry about that :)
I received two letters this week - one from Dad and one from Shantaye. Thanks so much!
We are still working on getting the members fired up and excited to help us (which I hope all of you as my family are being great member missionaries. It seriously moves the work forward so much faster.) Hna Soto is married and has a young daughter, Ana. They come together. Her husband is a truck driver. Yes, she is part of the ward but lives out of our area. Familia Fabian are members. Hna, Hno, son, and daughter. We eat dinner with them each Monday. And Hna Fabian is SO willing to help us out - it's great. We also had an amazing dinner with Hna Mosqueira who we found out there is a pretty new convert. She fed us pasta, pesto, and fish which we had been craving for a week or so! Best friends, for sure. No Mom, I am not learning to cook all this food. That will have to wait until after the mission. But I'm SO excited to learn how to cook! (A slightly strange, new development). And we met another ward family who agreed to feed us tomorrow which will be great.
It really is amazing to have a companion! We are teaching with much more unity and learning so much from each other - it's a great blessing. I love Hna Pechin. And yes, I can do anything with the Lord. Sometimes I just forget that He is on my side and it looks like a huge mountain I can never scale. But I know it is possible and I'm so grateful for this time to learn that firsthand (sometimes the hard way).
I love you all very much. I can't think of anything more at this very moment. Thank you for all the prayers and support. I know I am becoming a much better person and servant of God. Actually, Hna Pechin and I continue talking about sacrifice. We ask ourselves: what little thing can I sacrifice so I can receive more blessings? It has been pretty fun. I encourage you to think about that and set a goal and achieve it.

16 March - Coming to you from a new channel!
Hola Familia,
Wow, Dad. A little impatient are we? Mom, you picked up correctly. I didn't know where I was being transferred to when I sent you the e-mail. In our mission, we all gather in a transfer meeting and President calls out two names and an area. That is your new best friend and your new home. So I'll stop dragging it out. I'm currently in
MISSION VIEJO 5TH WARD (spanish-speaking).
We cover an entire stake - Laguna Niguel Stake. There are three stakes that feed into the one Spanish ward and with my companionship there is now one set of missionaries for every stake. Crazy, huh?
My companion is Hermana Rebecca Pechin. She's from Utah - grew up in Orem/Provo and was attending Utah State. Her mom lives in Logan now. She's the youngest of 8 children. Her dad died about 4 years ago. She has lots of energy and is fun. She also has moments where I know she's 21. But it's all good. We get along fine -- we can always learn things from everyone :)
Oh yeah, we whitewashed the area. We are in a newly-rented apartment which is good and bad. We have next to nothing (the mission just opened 4 new apartments so had to divide all they had in storage between them), but it is a pretty nice place. Huge perk: we have our own washer and dryer. Drawback: they are mini!
So it has been crazy with whitewashing and now I'm the senior companion - ah! Luckily, we had 13 investigators when we came in (unlike in Oceanside where we had 2 or 3). We now have two with baptismal dates - Jose Luis and Lucia. We actually set the date in our first lesson with them. It was pretty great. And a handful progressing. We have some others that seem very promising currently. We both are excited to do the Lord's work in this area. It was a surprise to all of us to be transferred after only 1 transfer. Hna Pechin was being trained in San Marco by Hna Talbot (my trainer) so I'm her first non-trainer companion in her 2nd transfer in the mission. Wow! Lots of responsibility on my little shoulders. Luckily, I'm not alone at all. Couldn't do it if I was!
But, Hna Pechin said great things are going to happen because it was interesting how it all worked out and surprised us. Hna Talbot is training the new Spanish sister (her 4th time in a row to train) which was really surprising. She only has about 2 transfers left on her mission. President called and talked to her and said he didn't want to separate Hna Pechin and Hna Talbot because they were doing great things, but felt that Hna Pechin needed to be elsewhere and Hna Talbot needed to train again. So we are supposed to be here! Even President Brady wouldn't have automatically chosen this setup. It's so neat to know the work is guided by the Lord on such a micro scale.
So, I'm not exactly sure what else to share with you. There is a lot I probably could say...... that is good to hear Shantaye sent a letter my way. It feels like 5 weeks since I've received a letter from the family (I could be off on that).
We are going to work really hard to help the people in this area prepare for baptism. I'm hoping we can prepare someone in the time we are together (be it one or two or more transfers). I will definitely NOT be going back to Oceanside for any baptisms. We are about 40 miles north of there. I may be on the opposite end of the mission! I'm pretty sure we are nearly as far north as we can be. Orange County - yeah! It is a very different area - so much more money around here. Wow. It has been really good to have a change and change some ideas and habits that I had already developed in just 4 short months. We have zone conference next Monday which should be great. (but also means we have to frenzy clean today)
The ward members were SO excited to have sister missionaries in the ward. So many of them came up and greeted us and welcomed us. It's great to be a SISTER missionary :) Many sisters were really sad we are not in their area. But so it goes. We were told by Sis. Soto (who will probably become a best friend even though she lives outside our area - she's a semi-new convert and loves to go out with the missionaries) that sisters work harder than elders. The last set of sisters helped 10 people prepare for baptism and the elders just 1 person. Yes, there are many other factors that contribute. But we have a high standard set for us!! It's great. The Bishop was just called last week so there have been lots of changes in the ward recently. And again, it's strange to be around so much money. They are still humble, wonderful people. I'm so grateful I am serving with the Hispanics! We had dinner with the Fabian Family yesterday. Tostados...yum.
And the weather is totally different! We've had some hot days and cold nights. It's strange. I was just at the point of being okay with the weather in Oceanside. He he. I guess the further north you go, the more extreme the weather is? I'm not really sure.
Congrats to Isaac! That is so exciting. I LOVE the temple. Please convey this advice for me: go as much as you can before the mission! You'll miss it while you are out and will want to rely on your memories to sustain you and help you be a better person and missionary.
That's exciting about Ben. Tell him I'm excited for him. Where is basic training?
And woo-hoo on the sun! I'm here putting on sunscreen. me he he
Okay, I can't think of other things to tell you at this moment. I hope everyone is doing super well. And reading their scriptures and praying every day - it is ESSENTIAL. No joke. Just do it. And do it for yourself, not for me or anyone else. I KNOW it is how we maintain a firm grip on the iron rod so we can return and live with God and our families again. How blessed we are to have the gospel! I love it.
And I love you all. Have a HAPPY, HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DAD! You're only just a little bit old now :D

9 March 2010 - 6 Months, She's out of here
Hola Familia!
Espero que todo este bien con Uds. (I hope that everything is well with you.)
I'm just sitting here with a million thoughts in my head. Ok, that's pretty normal. Well, maybe it is usually half a mil. Why, you ask? I'M GETTING TRANSFERRED today. In a few hours. Ah! And I'm also going to be the senior companion. Ah!
It's exciting and great as well. The Arangos are really sad to see me go. We visited with them last night. Mari really hopes that I will be serving close by so that I can come back for their baptism. We will see. They purchased a gift for me but will have to send it in the mail (and then I'll send it home :) And I gave them our home address - with my first name! Ha ha. People ask about my first name and I never give it to them. I feel protective of it. And it's not who I am now!
Anyway, that is the really big news for this week. We found out Sat. night. Hna Davis said "Seriously?" like 10 times to the district leader. I finally just ended the call. She really expected him to say 'just kidding'. We'd only been together one transfer. That's kinda short. Usually it's about 2 per companion. Then about 20 mins later one of the assistants called to extend the calling as senior companion. Yikes. And on Monday we were a little bit on pins and needles. President calls then to tell you if you will be training a new missionary. Don't worry, neither of us is for now.
Exciting news - I get to go explore a new area of SoCal!! And I may get to drive the car...mwa ha ha. I'm going to miss it here. I shared my testimony on Sunday. And I took a few more pictures with members. Which we will print today.
The other big thing for this week - I hit my 6-month mark. I seriously can't believe it! I'm a third of the way done. Wow. It's been wonderful and hard and fascinating. And the most amazing thing happened that day -- I received TWO packages. That's right, two. Dad's FABULOUS care package (the treats were perfect. Just what I wanted, in fact. Popcorn and those specific granola bars. Love the scarves!! It was just fabulous). The other package was from Taiwan. How exciting is that? A big card from the ward and a picture of them at the last ward conference, two packages of science noodles, one package of beef noodle soup, and hi-chew candy. It was such happy thing!! (Dad- thanks for sending a postcard to Hna Davis. She really liked it.)
Phew. So it's been an eventful week. Mostly the past two or three days as I try to pack but focus on missionary work. I feel like I'm in two places at once :) Next week I'll be writing from a whole new place with whole new experiences to share.
Our investigators here are doing well. We were certain 4 or so would be at church....none were :( We are teaching a couple, Ali and Bernice. And they are SO great. Sincere, interested, and with good questions. We have had some really great lessons with them. And I feel like I really have to strive to be a better missionary when I'm teaching them. It's great. In our last lesson, we talked about forever families and both Hna Davis and I just knew they are going to be one. And soon! But not on my watch...
Mari and Vianka are doing well. They are sad to see me go, but we'll keep in touch. And I'd love to bring the family back to meet them. I started my time here at their house, and ended my time here at their house. Ha ha! It feels like a second home.
We have two other investigators with baptismal dates, Cristian and Marcela. Cristian's suegra (mother-in-law) is a member of the ward. He is doing well and hopefully will get work arranged pronto (soon) so he can attend church and get baptized! His wife isn't interested in learning right now. And Marcela is so cute. We just feel so much love for her. And she always wears outfits in one color, but with patterns and they are well-coordinated. He he. She is doing pretty well. She actually requested a Bible. So essentially she was like a clean sponge ready to soak up info. It's refreshing!
There are others, but no more time.

Exciting news - I get to go explore a new area of SoCal!! And I may get to drive the car...mwa ha ha. I'm going to miss it here. I shared my testimony on Sunday. And I took a few more pictures with members. Which we will print today.
The other big thing for this week - I hit my 6-month mark. I seriously can't believe it! I'm a third of the way done. Wow. It's been wonderful and hard and fascinating. And the most amazing thing happened that day -- I received TWO packages. That's right, two. Dad's FABULOUS care package (the treats were perfect. Just what I wanted, in fact. Popcorn and those specific granola bars. Love the scarves!! It was just fabulous). The other package was from Taiwan. How exciting is that? A big card from the ward and a picture of them at the last ward conference, two packages of science noodles, one package of beef noodle soup, and hi-chew candy. It was such happy thing!! (Dad- thanks for sending a postcard to Hna Davis. She really liked it.)
Phew. So it's been an eventful week. Mostly the past two or three days as I try to pack but focus on missionary work. I feel like I'm in two places at once :) Next week I'll be writing from a whole new place with whole new experiences to share.
Our investigators here are doing well. We were certain 4 or so would be at church....none were :( We are teaching a couple, Ali and Bernice. And they are SO great. Sincere, interested, and with good questions. We have had some really great lessons with them. And I feel like I really have to strive to be a better missionary when I'm teaching them. It's great. In our last lesson, we talked about forever families and both Hna Davis and I just knew they are going to be one. And soon! But not on my watch...
Mari and Vianka are doing well. They are sad to see me go, but we'll keep in touch. And I'd love to bring the family back to meet them. I started my time here at their house, and ended my time here at their house. Ha ha! It feels like a second home.
We have two other investigators with baptismal dates, Cristian and Marcela. Cristian's suegra (mother-in-law) is a member of the ward. He is doing well and hopefully will get work arranged pronto (soon) so he can attend church and get baptized! His wife isn't interested in learning right now. And Marcela is so cute. We just feel so much love for her. And she always wears outfits in one color, but with patterns and they are well-coordinated. He he. She is doing pretty well. She actually requested a Bible. So essentially she was like a clean sponge ready to soak up info. It's refreshing!
There are others, but no more time.
Ok. Really have to go now. So many things to do before transfer meeting. I love you all so much! Thank you for the prayers, love, and support. It's essential.

2 March 2010 - Dito, go get the mail
Family!
Hola, hola. Isn't this nice weather fabulous?! Oh, sorry. You've only sort of experienced it. Well, it has been pretty great. We had one day with lots of rain but we survived. I pulled out my waterproof bag to protect my scriptures :)
So about the subject line. The other day we saw something SO hilarious and made up the dialogue that we thought went along with the image. We continue making up dialogues like it when we see funny things. Maybe you mostly had to be in the situation...I'm not sure.
What we saw:
Hna Davis - a little boy jumping off the back bumper of a car
Hna Green - a little boy hanging on a mailbox
Both - a little boy climbing back onto the car
Conjecture = he was climbing on the bumper to jump to try and open the mailbox.
How great is that?!
The Dialogue
Mom: Dito, go get the mail
Dito: But mama! no puedo (= I can't)
Mom: Ven, Dito. (= go)
Dito: but mama. No estoy bastante alto (=I am not tall enough)
Mom: Si, Dito. Usa el carro (= use the car)
Mwah ha ha. It has filled our days with joy and delight. Hope you chuckle as well! (PS Mum, could you print out this e-mail so I can save this memory for later? Thanks!)
So, the work continues onward "and worlds and lives abound". Sorry, hymn phrase just popped into my head. Love the hymns! Mari was at church again this week. Hurray! And Vianka too. We're hoping things will work out so they can be baptized in this month. (PS When did it get to March?! I'm almost at my 6-month mark. That's nuts.)
We have some other baptismal dates set with promising investigators. I'll let you know of any exciting things later.
We had dinner with Hna Pynes this week and she fed us Honduranean food. Yum! It was kind of like tostados (E. Green should know those). And very healthy. I love that! She is so fun. We enjoyed visiting with her. We also ate with Hna Ausman (bishop's wife) and her daughter last night. Mom-I thanked her on your behalf for her help with getting us fed by members.
I don't have too much else to say. Life's great. That transfer is almost over which is super crazy. It often goes by so fast. I love you all and thanks for all the support! I don't know anything more about my mission president. I'll probably know in July. :) And I purchased two dress shirts and two tank tops at Kohl's. I have pictures of me in one of them that I'll be printing and sending to you today.
Shantaye - I loved the late Valentine's Day card. Thanks! I hope you feel better soon. Enjoy the time when Mom can take care of you because it passes all too quickly.
Today I received a Valentine's card from Lhing and Khanh. Yeah :)
Chez - good luck with soccer tryouts. Let me know how it goes! And the basketball too. That is really exciting. I don't know about the password. I was certain that last one was correct.
Dad - that is great you are so busy! Well, great and not great. I'm glad you are "busy making money". Thanks for all the postcards.
